In 2007 after an exhaustive process, the International Association of Yoga Therapists issued the first modern definition. The background article is here. The definition is: "Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well being through the application of the philosophy and practice of Yoga."
And this has an expanded definition of yoga therapy on page 7.
Yoga therapy (YRx) is very different from the usual athletic yoga stereotype. As a young profession, YRx has a scope of practice, standards for accrediting schools and certifying individuals. There is also a pub-med indexed peer-reviewed research journal. These are the steps all professions take to advance safety and more development is in process.
Together We Are Creating the future of Yoga Therapy
Yoga therapy is in its earliest stages of development. Each us whether providing, utilizing, or researching YRx are contributing to the evolution of this robust system for both individual and global health. We have really only just scratched the surface of this system that affects genes to social behaviors.
Please ask if you need direction or connection in the YRx world. That is our mission. You might enjoy this 33 minute video of Matt addressing the IAYT Symposium in June 2016 on the future of YRx. Join us, won't you?
